PLANTING REVIEW – Part 1
Since we organized one of the most important periods of the planting season around the National Tree Planting Day in the spring, so much has been happening simultaneously with the 10 million Trees that we often don’t have time to pause for a moment and share in more depth and detail about everything that is being accomplished.
Now, during the quieter period of care, we reflect on the spring season and launch a series: we will share more detailed stories about special plantings, professional challenges, and important collaborations.
TOGETHER WITH COMPANIES: FLEX FOUNDATION
In the first episode of our series, we write about our collaboration with one of our partners, the Flex Foundation.
On the National Tree Planting Day in 2026, we planted nearly 200,000 trees nationwide. This required a lot of volunteers, serious organization, and partners who understand that afforestation is not a one-time action, but a long-term common cause.
ZALAI AFFORESTATION WITH ACORN SOWING
The Flex Foundation participated in two of our important projects: the afforestation in Pölöskefő, Zala, and the establishment of the Miyawaki mini-forest at the Nyitnikék Kindergarten in the XVIII district.
Both projects are unique.
Pölöskefő was particularly important to us. For the first time in our seven years of operation, we planted a forest partially through acorn sowing, marking our first afforestation project in Zala, and this six-hectare area is also our largest contiguous afforestation project to date.
We began the first phase of the multi-step planting on the occasion of National Tree Planting Day – 2026, in which the Flex Foundation played a role by financing 1,716 trees and having Flex employees personally participate.
The mentioned quantity of tree planting sequesters 3.02 tons of CO₂ annually, not only in the trees but also in the surrounding soil and leaf litter.
It is important to emphasize: this planting – like all our other afforestation efforts – does not aim to create economically driven forests. Every planting takes into account potential vegetation and is carried out with landscape reconstruction and biodiversity enhancement in mind, thus providing numerous benefits that mitigate the negative consequences of climate change beyond carbon sequestration.
It was particularly valuable for us that employees from several Flex factories came to the site located farther from Budapest. Larger forest areas cannot be created in the capital, which is why partners who think along with us in this regard are important.
NYITNIKÉK Miyawaki Mini-Forest
The planting of the Miyawaki mini-forest at the Nyitnikék Kindergarten in Budapest was also a milestone. In the story of the 10 million Trees, but likely at the national level as well, this was the first Miyawaki mini-forest established in a kindergarten.
Using the Miyawaki method , we create rapidly developing, high-biodiversity, nature-like habitats through dense and diverse planting of native species in a small area. At the Nyitnikék Kindergarten, with the financial contribution of the Flex Foundation, we planted 192 plants from 15 different species, with the participation of 15 volunteers from Flex, and of course, the kindergarten children and educators.
The carbon sequestration of these eco-oases is 0.0675 tons of CO₂/45 m²/year, but this is not their most characteristic ecological service. Their true advantage lies in the fact that they create multiple leaf surfaces compared to other urban tree plantings, thereby amplifying other positive effects significantly.
They cool the environment, capture airborne dust, retain more water in the soil, and greatly enhance biodiversity in urban settings by creating forest habitats.
After a few years, they will create several meters high, dense habitats that can provide shelter and food for hedgehogs and songbirds. They have a calming effect on the human soul, and in the case of preschool plantings, they also have an educational and sensitizing impact. Thus, not only has a new green space been born, but also a living, changing, learnable mini-forest that children will be able to observe up close every day.
NATIONAL TREE PLANTING DAY – 2027
Locations are already gathering for the planting celebration of National Tree Planting Day 2027. We hope to meet with Flex employees in the future and that, with the participation of partners like the Flex Foundation, we will achieve even more than this year’s incredible results.
