10 Million Trees Foundation/Community
What is the 10 Million Trees initiative?
Given that Hungary’s population is approximately 10 million, the 10 Million Trees initiative embodies the “1 person – 1 tree” principle.
Formed in July 2019 as a result of a Facebook post, the community has united to plant 10 million trees in Hungary and beyond for climate protection, involving as many people as possible.
What is the 10 Million Trees community? Is it an association, a foundation, or something else?
Legally, the 10 Million Trees community is backed by a foundation named the 10 Million Trees Foundation. Additionally, numerous local communities and volunteer groups have formed across the country, creating an active community often originating from other civil organizations. Each group has a Facebook presence for communication and outreach, along with an operational unit that manages plantings, permits, and community organization. Through all our Facebook groups, we have over 100,000 followers. Our groups have been established in more than 160 municipalities, making us the largest grassroots environmental community in Hungary.
What is the goal of the 10 Million Trees Foundation?
The goal of the 10 Million Trees Foundation is to plant as many trees and forests as possible in Hungary and other countries. It also aims to support and communicate the transformation of lifestyles contributing to the climate and biodiversity crisis, as well as to disseminate knowledge related to tree and forest planting. You can find our principles here.
How is the 10 Million Trees initiative different from other similar initiatives?
The 10 Million Trees community is currently the largest civil tree-planting community in the country. There is no other grassroots, volunteer-based, nationwide tree-planting or environmental organization founded in Hungary. We strive to ensure the long-term well-being of the trees we plant, thus we pay special attention to aftercare. Our activities are motivated by a common goal, so we do not compete with other tree-planting initiatives but celebrate every similar responsible effort. The uniqueness and special nature of the 10 Million Trees initiative also stem from the wide range of our plantings. We plant street trees in urban areas, establish forests in rural areas, have initiated several habitat restoration projects, and have created numerous Miyawaki forests in cities across the country. We support the greening of private gardens through community seedling distributions.
In addition to tree planting, we consider community building and knowledge sharing as our main tasks. You can find the principles of the 10 Million Trees community on our website here.
When do you plan to plant the ten million trees and what will happen afterwards?
There is no specific target date for planting the 10 million trees, but we strive to have 10 million fully grown trees in Hungary as soon as possible. According to our plans, we will not stop there, but will continue to work towards further afforestation.
How do we know how many trees have already been planted?
You can track how many of the 10 million trees have been planted according to our records on the website. We collect and summarize planting data seasonally. There are two planting seasons each year, in spring and autumn, so our data is updated twice a year.
I planted a tree as a private individual, can I register it in the 10 Million Trees counter?
If you would like your planted tree to be included in the 10 million, please write to us and we will register it.
How can I learn about local events?
The event calendar is available on the website. Due to our volunteer work, it may not always be up to date. Subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed about our events.
Most of the 10 Million Trees local groups have a Facebook group, so we also recommend searching for events in nearby groups. If you cannot find an event or contact, please reach out to us at the central email address 10milliofa@10milliofa.hu and we will help you find a suitable community. You can find the contact information for the groups on this map.
I wrote you a letter, but I haven’t received a response yet. What is happening?
Our community has grown tremendously in a short period of time and is still largely organized on a volunteer basis. A central group has formed, which strives to find answers to every question, suggestion, and task as quickly as possible. However, please keep in mind that we all work on achieving the goals of 10 Million Trees in our free time alongside our other commitments, families, full-time jobs, and other activities. Therefore, our response time may occasionally be lengthy, but we are working on it. In the meantime, please inquire within local groups about how you can participate in community life. Thank you for your patience!
Contribution/Joining
How can I help your activities?
We gladly welcome any donations related to tree planting. This can be in-kind contributions, such as land or any tools necessary for planting. It can also be personal contributions, such as participating in planting or organizing activities, or expertise that supports the community’s work in some way (knowledge in gardening, forestry, ecology, graphic design, law, communication, finance, management, or networking). Here you can indicate how you can help.
The 10 Million Trees community consists of private individuals but operates as a registered foundation (10 Million Trees Foundation) to also support the community’s goals in an organizational form. The climate crisis is awakening more and more companies to their responsibility to take part in stopping the harmful processes occurring in nature and in the immediate improvement of the situation. These progressive companies, which view the future of humanity responsibly, are our collaborative partners.
Planting 10 million trees is not only a massive undertaking but also costs a lot of money, often up to 10 billion forints. It can only be realized through the responsible contributions of companies and individuals. We emphasize that change can only be achieved through global responsibility, not social responsibility.
We are a public benefit organization, and contributions to our activities come with a 20% tax deduction, and 40% for long-term donations.
Uniquely among tree-planting organizations, we plant across the entire country and with all types of planting. Write to us at 10milliofa@10milliófa.hu and let’s figure out together how we can plant together.
How can I meet you in person?

Are you organizing team-building training?
Yes. For companies that wish to use their team-building activities to promote environmental awareness, we offer two options:
- habitat reconstruction: In Budapest, several hectares of forest are dominated by invasive species, creating a so-called monoculture. Our task will be to reduce the invasive species to make room for diverse reforestation and the planting of native species. Why is this a valuable task? If homogeneous forests develop, a disaster that wipes out a specific species can destroy entire forests, leading to a massive climate catastrophe. The contribution is 7,500 HUF/person, with a minimum of 112,500 HUF. We provide all equipment, offer hot drinks, refreshments, and snacks, and can prepare team-building games upon request.
- Performing supplementary activities related to planting, and/or planting shrubs, education, and team-building games as needed. In Budapest locations, in the protection of green areas. 15,000 HUF/person, minimum 225,000 HUF.
Of course, we are open to implementing more serious planting programs to assist companies in fulfilling their ESG obligations.
How much does a tree cost? (planting)
This question is often asked of us. In reality, there is no simple answer.
We plant forests, where a 20-80 cm cutting needs to be planted, as well as a row tree with a 120 kg root ball. Currently, there is a 75-fold difference in the costs between the two types of planting, and they require completely different organization and processes. There are several other planting types and programs in our repertoire, so based on the specific planting program, we usually enter into unique agreements with companies, with individual planting prices, packages, and various contributions to different planting types in various campaigns. The following chart shows the ideal ratio of plantings we aim to achieve. In this context, our average planting cost is currently 5,000 HUF.

Planting/Care
How to plant a tree?
The 10 Million Trees community has compiled a professional recommendation package with the help of gardeners, foresters, and ecological experts, which contains the most important information related to tree planting, from selectable or prohibited trees to care suggestions and planting advice. We have also published a visual tree planting guide. You can access the materials here: Tree Planting Guide. Our groups periodically organize educational sessions related to planting and community planting events, where you can learn the proper way to plant a tree. Join our local groups to gain experience. We wish you good luck!
Can I request a tree/seedling from you for planting?
The 10 Million Trees organization is fundamentally not a tree donor but a tree planting organization. It collects resources and uses them to carry out plantings.
However, our local communities often hold seedling distributions in the fall and spring, which are supported by the Foundation. You can adopt small 20-80 cm forestry seedlings, but only by joining local groups.
You can find the groups on this map.
Where can trees be planted?
Trees can only be planted with the permission of the owner of the given area.
The 10 Million Trees community has assembled a team of experts including gardeners, foresters, and ecologists to create a recommendation on what, where, and how to plant, as well as what should not be planted. The material is available here.
When are plantings organized?
The ideal time for tree planting is from the end of leaf fall to the beginning of bud burst, before and after the frost periods. The 10 Million Trees community strives to organize tree plantings during this period, which is the most suitable for the trees. In this regard, we have introduced the Day of Life planting celebration, which celebrates renewed life through tree planting about a month after All Souls’ Day. With the Day of Life, we aim to establish a tradition and plan to hold the national tree planting event and celebration at the same time every year. For specific dates and events, please check the Facebook pages of 10 Million Trees and its local groups.

What kind of tree should I plant?
The 10 Million Trees initiative primarily recommends planting native trees. Our community’s experts, including gardeners, foresters, and ecologists, have compiled a professional recommendation package that contains the most important information related to tree planting, from the types of trees that can or cannot be planted to care suggestions and planting advice. The material is available here.
Can I plant fruit trees as well?
Every tree counts! Fruit trees not only help with their shade and CO2 absorption but also play a role in future food supply and transportation alternatives, so our answer is: yes!
Are there prohibited trees that should not be planted?
Yes. The 10 Million Trees community does not support the planting of invasive and legally prohibited or unauthorized tree and shrub species and varieties. Our position on this matter and the affected species can be found at the following location.
What will happen to the care of the trees, who will water them?
The 10 Million Trees community aims to find a caretaker for every tree we plant, ensuring long-term care for that tree or trees. This means that the responsibility of the communities is not only to plant in quantity but also to care for the planted trees. The goal is to have 10 million fully grown trees in Hungary. Groups will find local solutions for the aftercare task, which can involve collaboration with a school, kindergarten, or other institutions, but a family or private individual can also take on the care of the trees.
The aftercare of the trees is an integral part of our key projects. In the summer of 2022, our watering truck circulated daily in Budapest to help our planted trees survive the heatwave.
