Miyawaki Forests & Mini Forests
2021-2025
We began installing Miyawaki forests in 2021, suspecting it was a good direction, but the results surprised even us.
Over the years, this term has become increasingly known to more people, as these ecological bombs are sprouting up as urban cooling islands.
By autumn 2026, 51 Miyawaki mini-forests have been completed with the help of 10 Million Trees and in collaboration with various partners.
We have grown very fond of these ecological enclaves, planted in the dirty, polluted urban asphalt sea, providing green islands that offer relief during the increasing number of heatwave weeks.
If we were to summarize briefly why we are installing Miyawaki mini-forests, we usually emphasize three + 1 reasons compared to traditional afforestation:
1. The leaf area can be 3-4 times larger in a given area,
2. Much higher biodiversity can be achieved in densely built urban areas,
3. The underutilized smaller green spaces can maximize other ecological services as well:
✅ cooling shade,
✅ evaporation, dust and noise absorption,
✅ aesthetic effect,
✅ protection against water and wind erosion,
✅ soothing effect on the soul.

The rapidly growing Miyawaki mini-forests serve as excellent demonstration sites for the young urban school generations who will experience the negative effects of climate change in the future. Here, urban children can easily learn what a forest means.

MIYAWAKI HUNGARY Program
PRESENTATION
Come walk with us through nine, “This is how it was, this is how it is” examples!
BAJA (Kodály Zoltán utca)Alig félévvel az ország legelső Miyawaki erdejének létrejötte után a 10 millió Fa is előrukkolt az első ilyen, akkor még előzmények, tapasztalatok nélküli kísérletével. Azóta meg sem állunk.
Ez az erdőcskénk 2021 novemberében keletkezett és jól látható, hogy a tervek szerint folyamatosan szépen gyarapodik, pedig a második kép nem is a mai, hanem a 10 hónappal korábbi állapotot mutatja.
Unicum Miyawaki – Boráros tér
A 10 millió Fa közössége egyszerre alkotta meg változó partnerekkel (FŐKERT, Zwack Unicum, GreenGo, One Tree Planted) a legtöbb magyarországi Miyawaki-erdőt, zömmel Budapesten, de pár vidéki helyszínen is, ugyanakkor pedig a műfaj szakértőivé is váltunk.
Az Unicum Miyawaki jelenleg 2 éves s ezalatt olyan magas és sűrű lett hogy a közösségünk alapítója Bojár Iván András el tud bújni benne.
SOROKSÁR
A 10 millió Fa legelső budapesti és az egyik legnagyobb, 200 m2-es Miyawaki erdeje. Két éve Soroksáron a bevásárlóközpontok mellett az Auchan-hoz tartozó zöldterületen mintegy kilencven darab koros kertészeti fából létrehozott nagy park közepén valósítottuk meg. Nagy is és nagyra is nőtt két év alatt.
4.) LENHOSSÉK UTCA – 9. kerület, 2022 ősz, 80 m2, 320 fa
Ez egy igazi csoda. Háborús romokra ültettünk. Természetesen nagyon alapos talajcserével. Ez is egy a Ferencvárosban végzett ültetéseink között, és itt is amellett, hogy szintén a GreenGo volt a partnerünk, a 9. kerületi közösségünk a Swimathlonon gyűjtött pénzt a megvalósítására.
Az eredeti helyszín egy klasszikus városi szűk utcában lévő apró kiteresedés, amit a környékbeliek a kutyáik könnyebbítő helyeként használtak. Por, igénytelenség, kiégett fűcsomók. Nagy munka volt az itteni, de megérte: ma virágzó növénykék között egyre magasabbra kúszó fák alkotnak máris, másfél év után eleven zöldterületet.
5.) RÁKÓCZI-HÍD – 9.kerület, 2023 tavasz, 70 m2, 280 faWe remember the good atmosphere, surprisingly many families, and children who came with us and the Főkert to plant. In the first picture, Zakar András, the CEO of Főkert, stands next to Franciska Hervai, as we worked here in collaboration with them.
Since then, we have diligently watered the site and freed it from the marks of vandal hands. A few days ago, when we visited with Zsolt Váradi, a pillar of the 10 Million Trees communication team, he almost disappeared among our rapidly growing little trees.
6.) ERDÉLYI JÁNOS TÉR – 9th district, Spring 2023, 30 m2, 120 trees
In Budapest, at the intersection of Bimbó Street and Ribáry Street in the II. district, there is a small green park. Last spring, we planted a mini forest there, the presence of which is now noticeable, and based on experiences from other locations, there is every hope that it will make a significant leap in development next year. Here, our partner was the 2nd district and GreenGo.
7.) SOROKSÁRI ÚT – HATÁR ÚT, 9th district, Spring 2023, 50 m2, 200 trees
At the meeting point of the two roads, we created a Miyawaki forest next to a gas station. This is the fourth urban mini forest planted in the 9th district, creating a thermal island and biodiverse surface using the same system. Péter Geszti and several law students were also among the planters. Today, the trees here are already impressively large, and soon one can hide among them.
8.) NEHRU PART – 9th district, December 2023, 40 m2, 120 trees
The park belongs to the Capital, so alongside the supervising Főkert, Zwack was again our partner in creating one of our youngest Miyawaki forests, which is only four months old. Here, the miracle of the method is truly perceptible. Four months is nothing in the life of plants. Yet, it is already visible how quickly our little trees are starting their lives.
9.) GESZTENYÉSKERT – 12th district, Autumn 2023, 40 m2, 120 trees
This is another very fresh little garden in Buda, in the Chestnut Garden. It is also only a few months old, and we created it in collaboration with GreenGo. Although it is almost a baby, it is already showing signs of development.
The 10 Million Trees Foundation, as Hungary’s largest Miyawaki mini-forest planting organization, organized Hungary’s FIRST MIYAWAKI MINI-FOREST CONFERENCE in collaboration with ELTE EKSZ.
