Miyawaki forests & mini-groves
2021-2025
We started planting Miyawaki forests in 2021, suspecting it was a good direction, but the results surprised even us.
Over the years, this term has become increasingly known to more people, as these ecological bombs functioning as urban cooling islands continue to sprout up one after another.
By autumn 2025, 40 Miyawaki mini-forests will have been completed
with the help of 10 Million Trees and various partners.
We have grown very fond of these ecological enclaves, planted in the dirty, dusty, polluted urban asphalt sea, providing relief as green islands during the increasing number of heatwave weeks.
If we were to summarize briefly why we are planting Miyawaki mini-forests, we usually emphasize three + 1 reasons compared to traditional horticultural afforestation:
1. The leaf area can be 3-4 times larger in a given area,
2. Much higher biodiversity can be achieved in densely built-up parts of cities,
3. The underutilized smaller green spaces can maximize other ecological services as well:
✅ cooling shade,
✅ evaporation, dust and noise absorption,
✅ aesthetic impact,
✅ protection against water and wind erosion,
✅ soothing effect on the soul.

The visibly fast-growing Miyawaki mini-forests serve as excellent demonstration sites for the young urban school generations who will experience the negative effects of climate change in the future. Here, urban children can easily learn what a forest means.

BAJA (Kodály Zoltán Street)
Just half a year after the establishment of the country’s very first Miyawaki forest, 10 Million Trees launched its first such experiment, which was then without precedents or experiences. Since then, we have not stopped.
This little forest was created in November 2021 and it is clearly visible that, according to the plans, it is continuously thriving, even though the second image does not show the current state, but rather the condition from 10 months ago.
Unicum Miyawaki – Boráros Square
The community of 10 Million Trees simultaneously created the most Miyawaki forests in Hungary with varying partners (FŐKERT, Zwack Unicum, GreenGo, One Tree Planted) mostly in Budapest, but also in a few rural locations, while we have also become experts in the genre.
The Unicum Miyawaki is currently 2 years old and has grown so tall and dense that our community’s founder, Iván András Bojár, can hide in it.
SOROKSÁR
The very first Miyawaki forest of 10 Million Trees in Budapest and one of the largest, covering 200 m2. Two years ago, we implemented it in Soroksár, in the green area belonging to Auchan, next to shopping centers, in the middle of a large park created with about ninety mature horticultural trees. It has grown large and has thrived in two years.
4.) LENHOSSÉK STREET – 9th district, autumn 2022, 80 m2, 320 trees
This is a true wonder. We planted it on war ruins. Naturally, with a very thorough soil replacement. This is also among our plantings carried out in Ferencváros, and here, in addition to GreenGo being our partner, our community in the 9th district raised funds for its realization at the Swimathlon.
The original location is a small widening in a classic narrow city street, which locals used as a place for their dogs. Dust, neglect, burnt grass clumps. It was a big job here, but it was worth it: today, among blooming plants, trees are already climbing higher, creating a vibrant green area after a year and a half.
5.) RÁKÓCZI BRIDGE – District 9, Spring 2023, 70 m2, 280 trees
We still remember the great atmosphere, surprisingly many families and children who came to plant with us and the Főkert. In the first picture, Zakar András, the CEO of Főkert, stands next to Franciska Hervai, as we worked here in collaboration with them.
We have been diligently watering the site since then, removing the traces left by vandal hands. A few days ago, when we visited with Zsolt Váradi, a pillar of the 10 Million Trees communication team, he almost disappeared among our rapidly growing saplings.
6.) ERDÉLYI JÁNOS SQUARE – District 9, Spring 2023, 30 m2, 120 trees
In Budapest, at the intersection of Bimbó Street and Ribáry Street in District II, there is a small green park. Last spring, we planted a mini forest there, the presence of which is now noticeable, and based on experiences from other locations, there is every hope that it will make significant progress in the coming year. Here, our partner was GreenGo in District II.
7.) SOROKSÁRI ROAD – HATÁR ROAD, District 9, Spring 2023, 50 m2, 200 trees
At the meeting point of the two roads, we created a Miyawaki forest next to a gas station. This is the fourth urban mini forest planted in District 9, following the same system, creating a thermal island and biodiverse surface. Péter Geszti and several law students were also among the planters. Today, the trees here are already impressively large, and soon one can hide among them.
8.) NEHRU BANK – District 9, December 2023, 40 m2, 120 trees
The park belongs to the Capital, so alongside the Főkert overseeing it, Zwack was once again our partner in creating one of our youngest Miyawaki forests, which is only four months old. Here, the miracle of the method is truly perceptible. Four months is nothing in the life of plants. Yet, it is already visible how quickly our saplings are starting their lives.
9.) CHESTNUT GARDEN – District 12, Autumn 2023, 40 m2, 120 trees
This is another very fresh little garden in Buda, in the Chestnut Garden. It is also only a few months old, and we created it in collaboration with GreenGo. Although it is almost an infant, it is already showing signs of development.
