We have reforested the forest!

On November 16, we planted 1,000 native tree saplings in Budapest’s Farkas Forest in collaboration with Főkert. The planting took place under an acacia grove.

BUT WHY ARE WE PLANTING TREES UNDERNEATH?

Mainly because we want to replace the existing non-native, homogeneous acacia grove with a native community, which does not provide enough foliage, biomass, and has poor biodiversity. Even after more than 40 years, it still looks only 15 years old.

Let’s face it, this is not the image that comes to mind when we think of a forest..

INVASIVE SPECIES

Additionally, the area was filled with invasive green ash, which the staff of Főkert removed, and we aim to permanently replace it with mainly pedunculate oak, field elm, wild pear, wild apple, and field maples.

The resulting native species will create a true forest that can finally provide habitat for many species in the future, while sequestering much more carbon than the current state.

PLANTING TREES IS GOOD!

We also planted because it’s good to plant, as evidenced by the happy smiles of the 58 people who participated, even at the end of the planting.
