How is a Miyawaki mini-forest created?
We are waiting for you for the final step of the planting this Saturday, the 19th, between 10:00 and 13:00, when we will plant the “mini forest received from you” for the 5th birthday of 10 Million Trees, in the courtyard of the ELTE Nagytétényi út dormitory.

But what preliminary steps are necessary for the creation of a Miyawaki mini forest?
Discover the five essential steps that were necessary for the establishment of the 10 Million Trees’ 5th birthday Miyawaki mini forest.
1. Finding a suitable location – May 2024
This is often the most challenging part, as a location is needed where property rights are clear and it is ensured that the planted mini forest can grow undisturbed for years or even decades.
The Miyawaki mini forest grows quickly, so during planting, the saplings that look like little twigs will already flourish as a dense green oasis after just two or three years, sometimes even in the midst of the grayest concrete jungle!
2. Securing the necessary financial resources – June-July 2024
The idea for the birthday Miyawaki came from the leadership of 10 Million Trees, and perhaps you remember: with the help of ambassadors, the necessary funding was raised in just over a month.
Often, a collaborating company suggests the idea of wanting to plant a mini forest to green the city, or a local government sees potential in establishing a neighborhood pocket forest.
3. Selecting plants – June-July 2024
When compiling the list of plants and tree species, we consult our forest ecologist and forestry experts, who will monitor the growth of the plant community for years after planting and will suggest replacements if necessary.
4. Soil replacement – October 2024
One of the secrets to the rapid growth of the Miyawaki mini forest is that planting is always preceded by quality soil replacement.
In urban areas, it is rare to find good, rich Hungarian topsoil waiting for us. In most cases, construction debris, rubble, cable remnants, or household waste lie beneath the surface.
The soil replacement ensures the often incredibly rapid growth of the planted saplings.
5. Planting – OCTOBER 19, 2024
This is the step we are waiting for this Saturday!
About four plants are allocated per square meter, so we usually progress quickly, allowing time for conversation and to enjoy every moment of the autumn planting!

+1. Care – Aftercare
The first years are the most critical, so we will closely monitor the fate of the planted mini forests for three years. If necessary, we will water, replace, or repair fences and support stakes.
