March 1, 2025 – National Tree Planting Day
Previously: December 18.
Péter Geszti was among the first to join National Tree Planting Day, as he has been planting with us for years; sometimes with his own hands, sometimes with his thoughts and ideas, helping to plant more and more trees.
Why does he consider tree planting important?
This is the question we posed to him, and in his characteristically lively manner, he summed up the essence in one minute.
Previously: November 7, 2024.
Ethologist Vilmos Csányi, Péter Geszti, Gergely Litkai, and the idea’s originator, András Bojár, founder of 10 Million Trees, along with forest ecologist Réka Aszalós and the organization’s chief coordinator, Franciska Hervai, highlighted the importance of tree planting and forests at the press conference for the newly launched National Tree Planting Day.
During the event, it was mentioned that everyone feels the effects of climate change; just think of the rapid rise in food prices. Therefore, the organizers are expecting every Hungarian to join the National Tree Planting Day on March 1, 2025, across the country’s eight regions, where it is already known that at least 100,000 trees will be planted under the coordination of 10 Million Trees.
The whole country should join!
Gergely Litkai, who moderated the event, drew attention to a shocking point, “to understand how serious the problem is: there is hardly any truly untouched forest in Hungary, primeval forest! What exists is only about the size of half of Audi’s plant in Győr. So there is plenty to be done.”
On National Tree Planting Day, in addition to the participating civilians, all organizations, institutions, and companies in Hungary can take part. Schools, kindergartens, barracks, universities, companies, theaters, hospitals, sports and religious communities, choirs, hiking groups, employees of multinational companies, yoga practitioners, and birdwatchers, as well as members of various social or civil organizations, and even companies from the national capitalist class.
The country’s trees must be doubled!
The issue of maintaining human habitats is everyone’s concern. We can significantly increase Hungary’s forest coverage and tree-dominated green areas on a large scale.
We can replenish much of what our ancestors, and we ourselves, have deforested from Hungary since the beginning of the industrial revolution.
According to Professor Vilmos Csányi, who supports the program,
“The most important thing is that we love trees. That’s all there is to it!” Today, there are about 6 billion trees in Hungary, and we should aim to double or triple that number. Planting 10 million trees could be the first step.”
Starting this year, we are designating the first Saturday in March as National Tree Planting Day, with the inaugural event on March 1, 2025. We, as a foundation, are doing this to ensure the botanical and ecological professionalism of the plantings, as well as to preserve the original mission of this well-intentioned initiative, preventing it from being co-opted for political or business purposes.
Hungary plants!
Bojár Iván András, founder of 10 Million Trees, stated: “Hungary plants; this could be the motto of National Tree Planting Day. An average person should be able to spare 1.5 hours to engage in this activity. The most important thing is that the event has no ribbons, political or other labels.
The trunk of a tree is circular; it has no left or right side. Similarly, there is no left- or right-wing climate crisis, heatwave, drought, or desertification. We have noticed that planting has recently become a welcome trend: companies, media personalities, families celebrating birthdays, politicians, kindergarteners, civilians, and various organizations are planting trees. This is wonderful!
This day is about us Hungarians, our health, and the future of our children! So let’s come together, harmonize our scattered activities, and concentrate on a single day, Saturday, March 1, 2025, National Tree Planting Day.”
Péter Geszti has also long been involved in the work of 10 Million Trees.
In his speech, he said, “As idealists, we try to maintain our ability to believe in miracles. The hardest part is changing our habits and lifestyle.
It’s difficult to step away from the program we live in. The motto of 10 Million Trees, ‘one person, one tree,’ is excellent; everyone can alleviate their conscience during the planned planting. We place our trust in the future by acting correctly in the present: we can plant together on March 1. We plant, and we nurture!”
Réka Aszalós, a researcher and forest ecologist at the Ecological Research Center, an expert at the organization, stated: “One of the most important functions of the forest is its cultural service. This is primarily why we are drawn to forests.
A beautiful, natural, old forest not only creates diverse recreational opportunities, such as hiking, cycling, and dog walking, but it also heals, providing mental peace, which can be life-saving for people living stressful lives in urban environments.”
Franciska Hervai, chief coordinator of 10 Million Trees, spoke about the concrete steps taken so far:
“Even before the organization has started, we can already see that on March 1, we will definitely plant at least 100,000 trees! There will be afforestation in 8 regions of the country, Miyawaki tree planting, seedling planting, and urban planting.
An information platform is being prepared at nemzetifaultetes.hu to provide details on which nurseries will supply the trees to the planting sites, where the locations will be, and how to get involved.”
Previously: November 5, 2024.
We warmly invite you to the press conference organized by the 10 Million Trees community, where among others, ethologist Vilmos Csányi, Peter Geszti, and Ivan András Bojár, the leader of 10 Million Trees, will announce the National Tree Planting Day.
We already know that this nationwide initiative will see at least 100 locations planting 100,000 trees with the participation of 10,000 people, but this number could grow exponentially.

Background – history
As is known, the 10 Million Trees community announced the National Tree Planting Day on Earth Day, which will be open not only to existing volunteers and occasional helpers of 10 Million Trees but to all citizens. We hope that they will participate. The climate crisis, ecological, and biodiversity crises affect every resident of the Earth, including Hungary. We can seek solutions to the problem locally. Our goal is to make the solution as impactful as possible.
Let us prove in a single day: Hungary is the greenest country in Europe! In one well-organized, united day, let Hungarians plant as many trees as they can. This time, the number of participants is more important than the number of trees planted. Ideally, every Hungarian should plant at least one little tree in their lifetime, coordinated with us, not necessarily more.
The first National Tree Planting Day will be held on March 1, 2025, and then every first Saturday of March thereafter.
Previously: April 22, 2024.
On April 22, 2024, Earth Day, the 10 Million Trees national community will launch National Tree Planting Day, inviting the entire country to join us, because: “There is no left- or right-wing climate crisis, heatwave, drought, or desertification.”
National Tree Planting Day is Hungary’s local response to global problems. The goal of the 10 Million Trees initiative is to make Hungary the greenest country in Europe.
We will not waste any more time; we will stir the waters significantly. We will take a truly big step. And for this, we invite the entire country to join us. If many of us Hungarians believe in it, we can achieve a feat together that will be recognized and envied throughout Europe, and perhaps even beyond.
Let’s prove that Hungary is the greenest country in Europe!
“This year, in 2024, on Earth Day, we are declaring an action day, in which not only the existing volunteers and occasional helpers of 10 Million Trees can participate, but all citizens as well. We hope they will participate.
The climate crisis, the ecological and biodiversity crisis affects every resident of the Earth, including Hungary. We can find solutions to the problems locally.
Our goal is to make the solution as impactful as possible. Let’s prove in just one day: Hungary is the greenest country in Europe!

We welcome every organization, whether it is a church community, kindergarten, sports club, company, choir, or even a yoga group
On National Tree Planting Day, in addition to the joining civilians, all organizations and groups in Hungary, institutions, and companies can participate: schools, kindergartens, barracks, universities, companies, theaters, hospitals, sports and church communities, choirs, hiking groups, employees of multinational companies, yogis and birdwatchers, and members of various social or civil organizations.
The issue of maintaining human habitats is everyone’s issue. Once a year, well-prepared, with just a few hours of commitment, we can achieve a tremendous result together. We can significantly increase Hungary’s forest cover and green areas dominated by trees. We can replenish much of what our ancestors and we ourselves have deforested from Hungary since the beginning of the industrial revolution.
